Hollis "Holly" Borland, 88 of Oelwein, formerly of Waterloo and Mesa, Arizona, died at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein, Thursday, February 21, 2013. Holly was born March 5, 1924, in Fayette, Iowa, son of Forrest and Mae Marsh Borland. He married Evelyn Luth in 1945 in Waterloo. They have been happily married for 67 years. He was a graduate of Oelwein High School in 1943, attended I.C.S. graduating in Engineering in 1947. Holly served as a Sergeant in the 34th Infantry Division of the Iowa National Guard from 1947 to 1949. He retired in April 1982 after 38 years with John Deere as an architectural engineer. Holly was a Member of the John Deere Supervisors Club, President of the John Deere Community Credit Union (now Veridian), Member of the Elks and Masonic Clubs, Member of the Waterloo Planning and Zoning Committee, Member of the Waterloo Community Theater – set design and building, Lieutenant Governor for Iowa's International Optimist, President and Director of Mesa, Arizona Home Association, Ambassador for Oelwein Chamber and Area Development and recipient of the 2012 Honorary Chamber Member of the Year. He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Oelwein; daughter Terry (Don) Glasco of Seaside, California; daughter Carolyn (Herb) Milbach of Colorado; daughter Audrey Tedore of Reno, Nevada; daughter Diane (Edward) Anderson of Plainfield, Illinois; 12 grandchildren and one sister. Holly was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Barbara Borland, three brothers and five sisters.
