She heard the report of a gun upstairs and knowing that the daughter-in-law was not yet up, called her son and together they went to the bedroom where they found Mrs. Phelps lying on the floor with a 32 caliber revolver in her hand. She was practically dead. The neighbors and Dr. Johnson were summoned and in a very few minutes they arrived. Dr. Johnson found that the bullet had pierced the heart and that life was gone forever. The coroner was notified by felt that an inquest was not necessary as a note in Mrs. Phelps own handwriting was sufficient evidence that she had meditated the tragedy. Mrs. Phelps was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Sack, who reside 2 miles north of Gresham. Three years ago she was married to Raymond Phelps and they had made their home on a farm 3 1/2 miles west of town. Holly, as she was called, was well known in the community and had a multitude of friends. She had a very attractive personality, was especially fond of music, both piano and violin, in which she was accomplished. Many of our young people had been her pupils. The direct causes that lead to unhappy death are not fully known. It is only in the infinite knowledge of the Master of Men that the truth can ever receive its just valuation. Despondency had been her general attitude for several days, and this probably led to the final act. Our community extends to the bereaved loved ones its deepest sympathy, and together we hope to share in the sad burden upon their hearts. Holly Frances Sack was born October 27, 1895 in Polk County, Nebraska and died March 8, 1921 aged 25 years, 5 months and 11 days. Holly lived practically all her life in the Wayland community. In 1913 she attended Palmer College at Albany, Missouri and returned in the fall of 1914 because of severe illness was compelled to come home. She united with the Wayland Christian Church April 11, 1915. She was married to Raymond Phelps December 26, 1917. Holly was a talented musician and had taught in Wayland, Gresham and neighboring towns. The whole community will miss her music for she was very generous with her gift and rarely refused to play or sing. Mrs. Phelps leaves to mourn her husband, her father and mother Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Sack, 4 brothers Vern (of North Loup), Glenn, Dean and Fay; 2 sisters Mrs. Bessie Bond and Mrs. Mabel Lindquist (all of Gresham). Funeral services were held at the home of Rev. C. G. Nelson on March 9 with interment in Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
