Swain died at his residence on Prairie Street Tuesday morning as a result of an operation of appendicitis, performed Thursday afternoon of last week. The untimely death of this strong and popular citizen has shrouded the city in the deepest gloom. On Wednesday, the 12th, he was about town as usual, looking after his business in the butter, egg and poultry line. During the day he complained of a severe pain in his bowels, which his physician diagnosed as emanating from appendicitis. No relief was apparent by Thursday morning and that afternoon an operation was performed by Drs. Whitels of Iowa City and C. B. and J. E. Kimball. A very serious condition was disclosed thereby. The patient withstood the ordeal nicely, but the attending physicians regarded his hold upon life as extremely precarious. After a prolonged struggle, his spirit took its flight about 7 o'clock Tuesday morning. Mr. Swain was born at Attica, Marion county, March 17, 1863, being sightly less than 40 years of age. He has resided in West Liberty for the past twenty-five years. October 23, 1888, he was united in marriage with Miss Myrtle Baker, who, with four sweet little daughters, mourn the loss of husband and father. Six sisters and two brothers reside in California, his parents having preceded him to the better land. Mr. Swain engaged in a number of occupations with more or less success. For several years he operated a dray on the streets and was invariably faithful, courteous and reliable. For the past two years he has been engaged in the butter, egg and poultry trade which he had developed into a remunerative business, distributing thousands of dollars among the farmers of the section. The falling of this strong and vigorous man comes as a crushing blow to his family and friends. He was in the prime of life, as fine a specimen of physical manhood as the town affords. And though endowed with a rugged physique, he had the mild and sensitive nature of a woman. No kinder husband, no more indulgent father ever lived. In his daily walk and talk with men his manner was always mild and his words carefully weighed. He was the soul of honor in every trial of like. Not only a strong but an intrinsically good man has been called from earth, from family and friends. Twenty years ago his father, Rev. W. A. Swain, was a superannuated M.E. minister of the town, having been forced to retire from his pastorate at Sweetland by reason of failing health. Our departed friend and brother was thus reared in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, early giving his heart to the Master and consecrating his life to His service. At the time of his demise he was actively identified with the work of the church. With his latest breath he assured his pastor and sorrowing family that all was well with his soul, and that his going was but a transition from the life temporal to the life eternal. The sympathy for the wife and daughters thus cruelly bereft of husband and father is unbounded. The funeral will be held from the late residence of the deceased this afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment in Oakridge. Friends are invited from 9 to 11. The K. of P. order, of which Mr. Swain was a prominent member, will assemble at the castle hall at 1:15.
