Oddly enough, his first introduction to Fairmont, NE, was in 1944 as a student top-turret gunner and later as a pilot of B-24 and B-29 bombers bound for Austria and Tokyo. Homer was educated at Transylvania College in Lexington, Kentucky, the college chosen by the Army Air Corps for their elite corps. He saw combat action in the Foggia, Italy campaign, flying missions through the Brenner Pass with the German guns poised above the American formation of Liberators that took heavy flak. He said that at one point the flak was so heavy, he had to leave the pilot and relieve the top-turret gunner; “I engaged the enemy with such intensity that I melted one-third of the gun barrel.” To talk with Homer, a very modest man, you might never guess what he had been through as a WWII combat veteran. He lost most of his hearing when an ordinance in the bomb bay exploded within close range. He never complained about it. Coming to York from the Fairmont air base, he happened to walk in to Moore’s Drugstore located at 6th and Lincoln Avenue; he found himself looking at an attractive and vivacious girl who was looking just as intently at him—they were both looking at each other via a large mirror in the drugstore. After 67 consecutive dates, he left for Harlingen, Texas, and she went to the university at Boulder, Colorado. They married on January 15, 1945. That was the beginning of Jean Moore Hees and Homer Hees in York, Nebraska. Unassuming though he was, Homer was friendly and affable. He was asked to run for mayor of York twice but declined. He was first in his college class in overall physical acumen, an ability which translated into golf at the York Country Club (he achieved a hole-in-one), bowling (he scored 300), Legion baseball (3rd base), swimming, and just about everything else including marbles (teaching kids). He ran a successful business, Davis Paint Store, which opened in 1954. It was sold circa 1990. His memberships are legion: VFW, as commander of the American Legion in 1966, ELKS, as a snare drummer in the York Drum & Bugle Corps, the 40-8 club and the United Methodist Church in York where he was baptized along with his children, Nancy and Peggy, and his father-in-law, Wade Edward Moore. Homer was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Harold Hees, Sr., and Minnie Myrtle Hull-Hees; grandparents, Immanuel and Nettie Hull (whose parents emigrated from the Netherlands to Bordman, PA in 1848) and John T. and Charlotte Hees, also a Dutch name (Voorhees) which was modified at Ellis Island; sister, Lillian A. Hees-Hamann; and his beloved wife, Vera “Jean” on January 10, 2010. Survivors include: a sister, Jacqueline Alys Powell; daughters, Peggy Ann Brumbaugh and Nancy Jean Lenhart; grandchildren, Matthew Myers, Mitzi Myers-Nannen, Nicholas Brumbaugh, Nathan Brumbaugh, M. Wade Brumbaugh, and Elizabeth Ann Brumbaugh-Weber; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Michaela, Jessica, Emily, Christian, Heath, Gavin, Presley, Faith, Eve, Ethan, Sophie, Arician, Anna; great-great grandson, Mason. Graveside services were on Saturday, October 20, at Greenwood Cemetery with military honors and bagpipes. Memorials to the church or to the American Legion or VFW would be appreciated.
