Homer's middle name was Newton on the birth record. His father was a rancher. He was enumerated as Homer M. Young age 9 in the 1880 census in Braintree Vermont with his widowed mother Ellen age 38 and sisters Jennie A. 16 and Janice B. age 2. On Dec 3, 1894 he married Nellie L. Jackson born West Brandon, Vermont. In 1900 he was living in Barre Vermont and was age 29 and working as a barber. He had been married 5 years but his wife was not in the household. He was enumerated as Homer N. Young in 1910, age 39 in Plainfield Vermont. He had his own barber shop and he and Agnes had a daughter Ellen W. age 1. Some time later he moved to New Hampton NH where they had a stillborn child in 1919. He was enumerated in 1930 as H. M. Young age 59, having his own barber shop, wife Agnes age 51 and son enumerated as Homer M. Jr then age 19 also a barber. John N. Young died age 60 and 18 days from a cerebral hemorrhage. Dec. 20, 1917 Dear Mother and all at home: I have just received your letter and was mighty glad to hear from you, and that you are all well. I am feeling fine. It is rather cold here and the leaves have fallen. There is about an inch of snow on the ground here. Tell Bert not to worry about the Germans coming over there. They have got all they can tend over here. Don't believe all you read in the papers. I wish you would send me a Sunday Globe, if you will. You can send it all right and the Citizen. I have received no packages yet, but it takes a long time to get mail over here. I wish you would send some stockings, talc, powder, shaving soap and dental cream. Tell Bunny I said not to bother you when you are writing to me — the little rascal. I hope Father don't have to go. The boys are all together except Lorenzo, and I don't know where he is. Don't send me any more stamps, as it does not cost anything to send a letter from here. Tell Hazel I would write to her but they allow us only two letters a week, but I have not forgotten her. Irving sends his best regards to all and wants them to write. I have been in the hospital four days. Nothing serious. I hope this war will end before long. I am sick of this life. I want to get back to God's country. Don't worry about me, for I am all right for the present anyway. You can give me some chocolate if you want to. Dear Mother Just a line to let you know that I just came out of the hospital today, nothing serious, just a little touch of trench fever. I did not write last week as I intended to as the Huns spoiled my plans. They chased me out of a home into a trench. They kept me guessing for about three hours as to whether I would see the U.S.A. and home again. Those are the chances we have to take but this is the closest I have had so far. They had me saying my prayers while shell were breaking on top of the trench. The air seemed full of birds and butterflies and then a piece of shell would land in the trench just to let you know that it wouldn't be healthy to poke your head over the top. Irving is with me now. When I saw him he was just getting out of his gas mask. He is feeling fine and wants to be remembered to all. I am sending you a service stripe just like the one I am wearing and I will send you a copy of the Stars and Stripes, a newspaper I get over here. I have not heard from you for some time.
