Elected to the House, he represented his home district in the Fortieth (1852-1853), Forty-first (1854-1855), Forty-second (1856-1857), and Forty-third (1858-1859) General Assemblies. While in the House, he was a member of the committees on the colored population (1852-1853), public buildings (1854-1859), and agriculture (1856-1859). He served Union in the state Senate for the Forty-fourth (1860-1861), Forty-fifth (1862-1863), Forty-sixth (1864), and Forty-seventh (1865-1866) General Assemblies. The elder of the two individuals (sometimes designated as senior) was born circa 1801, married, and fathered several children, including Henry S., William J., Elizabeth (m. Albert G. Means). Margaret (m. James L. S. Hill), Narcissa (m. Glenn Dickson Peake [1831-1909]), Martha (m. W. J. T. Glenn), and Thomas. According to his will, he owned approximately 2,750 acres in Union County and 6,400 acres in Louisiana. He died in March 1890. Another and younger Robert Beaty was born 20 January 1820, the son of Samuel Beaty and Sarah Sartor. On 12 December 1844, he wed Frances C. Jeter who bore him one son, William A. (b. 1846). In 1860, the federal census classified him as a farmer and valued his real and personal estates at $113,000 and $140,000 respectively. This Robert Beaty died 5 May 1896 and was buried in Mount Vernon Presbyterian Cemetery in Union County. Extant records mentioned a Colonel Robert Beaty who could have been either of the foregoing men; he was noted for his large home, abundant wealth, and excellent race horses. Slave schedules for 1860 recorded two listings of seventy-eight slaves and sixty-eight slaves as belonging to one (or more) Robert Beatys, with the former figure credited to the Colonel. Furthermore, the 1850 census listed yet a third Robert Beaty, age thirty-nine, with no given occupation. However, as this was the only time he appeared in any record, he seemed the least likely contender for the legislature and therefore was eliminated from consideration. Union, March 8. Special: The sad news of the death of Mr. Robert Beaty, Sr., reached here this morning. He died last night at his old home, four miles distant from this place. Mr. Beaty was 89 years of age, and until the last preserved his sound mind and until a few weeks ago his good health. Last year Mr. Beaty joined the Presbyterian Church, and a short while later his old friend and neighbor and boyhood playmate, Col. Robert Macbeth, followed in his wake and joined the Baptist Church. Mr. Beaty went to see his friend baptized in the Fair Forest and was the first one to clasp his hand after coming out from the water. This incident brought tears to the eyes of the multitude. Mr. Beaty was always wealthy, and left a considerable fortune to his descendants. His son, Dr. Henry S. Beatty is at present a member of the House of Representatives. Mr. Beaty never entered public life, but was always a hard working, honest farmer and an upright, honorable man.
