Porter, age 81, of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Wilkes County, died Friday, May 23, 2008 at his home. Mr. Porter was born April 24, 1927 in Wilkes County to Dewey and Vestie Souther Porter. He was an avid sports fan of NC basketball, the Atlanta Braves and NASCAR. Mr. Porter was a member of ELKS #221, DAV's, Mill Cove Golf Course and played bridge at the Jacksonville School of Bridge. He was preceded in death by a son Danny Ray Porter; a sister, Juanita Myers; two brothers, Bradley Porter, Leo Porter; and a granddaughter, Leia Lem. Mr. Porter was a member of Arlington Baptist Church in Florida. Mr. Porter was a World War II Navy Veteran. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Porter of the home; one daughter, Sharon Lem and husband David of High Point; a step son, Michael McKinney and wife Joanne of California; five brothers, Curtis Porter, Coy Porter both of Georgia, Ralph Porter of Tennessee, Wilmer Porter of McGrady, Van Porter of California; four sisters, Mildred Emmert, Doris Cullins both of California, Betty Wyatt of North Wilkesboro, Arlena Handy of McGrady; two granddaughters, Janelle Lem, Ashley Lem both of High Point; one step grandson, Ian McKinney of California. Graveside services with military rites by VFW Post 1142 were held Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Dehart Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Greg Hall and the Rev. Dean Adams officiating.
