He grew up in Belchertown, MA with brothers, Enos, and Calvin Jr. who died as a result of an explosion a fluid lamp in Springfield. Horace married Mary Hutchinson on 5 May 1852 at the age of 24 and lists his occupation as farmer. On 20 Aug 1862, he enlisted to serve in the Civil War on the side of the Union. He was 34 years old.
