He had been ailing for some days past, but was not confined to his bed and was generally considered as an unusually robust man. Friday evening he ate with the family, and seemed better than usual, conversing freely and in excellent spirits. Read More	-------------- St. Helena Star, April 2, 1880 Our community was startled and shocked Saturday morning last at the announcement of the sudden death of Captain Horace Merriam, at his home on Hudson street. He had been ailing for some days past, but was not confined to his bed and was generally considered as an unusually robust man. Friday evening he ate with the family, and seemed better than usual, conversing freely and in excellent spirits. About midnight a numbness set-in which was at first thought little of, but increasing soon grew alarming and about 8 o'clock the next morning he died. His remains were interred Monday at 2 p.m. from the family residence, and followed to the grave by an unusually large concourse of relatives and friends. Captain Merriam was a native of Morrell, Maine, where he was born September 22, 1812. At the age of 21 he went to learn the trade that became the business of his life—shipbuilding, at Thomaston, in the same State. There be worked 10 or 12 years, and thence he went to Rockland, where he engaged on his own account, as master builder, doing a large business, having many men employed, and at times as high as five vessels on the stocks at once. He staid at Rockland in business until 1862, when he came to California and worked a season at San Francisco, helping to build the steamer Yosemite. In 1863 he went to China in the employ of a commercial firm, built a gunboat for an English firm and a dry-dock for the English government. In China he contracted a favor which undermined his health and broke him down. He returned in 1865 to Maine and continued his business of shipbuilding here until 1877 when he came here with his family, his sons Horace and Fred having already preceded him. He was a Mason and a member of the Baptist Church, and leaves a wife, two daughters and three sons to mourn his loss. -------------- -------------- This information was provided prior to my management of this memorial, and I didn't want to remove it.
