Description	:	Hosea J Dean was born near Dayton, Ohio, the son of Hosea and Leah (Voorhis) Dean. He used the middle initial J to distinguish himself from his father; it did not stand for a middle name. Between 1824 and 1826 he moved with his parents to Crawfordsville, Indiana. On August 27, 1846 he married Rebecca Mitchell Ketcham, daughter of Absalom and Sarah (Martin) Ketcham. They joined two other white families living in the unsettled area occupied by the Pottawattamie Indians. In the spring of 1869, Hosea and Rebecca moved their family to Hampton, Iowa and in 1870 they moved to Mason City, Iowa. Mason City Express, December 29, 1880: Old Mr. H.J. Dean, who has been ill for several weeks, with something like brain fever, died at his home in north part of town on the 23d inst. Funeral services by Elder Sale at the Baptist Church on Friday last.
