Howard A Furman, well known young farmer living northwest of Jewell, died at 12:15 a.m. last Saturday at Rochester, Minn., his death resulting from acute gangrenous appendicitis. Mr. Furman had been sick only one week and was a patient at the Hamilton County hospital in Webster City until Friday when he was taken to Rochester, his death occurring there shortly after midnight Saturday night. Howard Alexander Furman was the son of A. A. and Sarah Furman. He was born at the Furman farm home north of Jewell, October 24, 1902 and died August 24, 1940, at the age of 37 years and 10 months. His entire life was lived in this community and in Webster City. He received his schooling in the Webster City schools. Mr. Furman married Miss Lillian Olthoff, of near Kamrar, April 23, 1929; one son, Jimmie Dean, being born to this union. Mrs. Furman died April 12, 1931. He married Miss Thora Emelia Christensen, of Jewell, December 18, 1933. Five children were born to this union. Gary Allen, Mary Margaret, Jane Phillis, Gretchen Louise, and Sara Christine. Mrs. Furman is survived by his devoted wife and six children; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Furman; one brother, Clifton A Furman of Jewell, one sister, Mrs. Faith Renner of Lubbock, Texas, and many other relatives. One brother and two sisters preceded him in death. The heartfelt sympathy of all in this community is extended to the sorrowing family in their bereavement, and Mr. Furman's unexpected death is a shock to a host of friends as well as to the family. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, a 1:30 at the home and 2:00 at the German Presbyterian Church. The pastor Rev. H. F. Sinning, and Rev. Carl Opsahl, Lutheran pastor of Jewell, officiated. Burial was in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery beside the body of his first wife. The pall bearers were Kenneth Furman and Arthur, Oscar, Harold, Elmer and Thorvold Christensen. A quartet, Dr. and Mrs. L. N. Jacobson and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Rasmussen, with Mrs. Harry Harman accompanying, sang a song at the home and another at the church service. And Lester and Lorraine Luppes a song at the church.
