A gathering of family and friends at Rudd UMC will be announced later. He was born in rural Greene, Iowa, the youngest of eight children to Raymond and Elizabeth (Everly) Smith. He was born in rural Greene, Iowa, the youngest of eight children to Raymond and Elizabeth (Everly) Smith. He attended country school. He was married on 16 Sep 1950 to Gertrude "Trudy" Bell in Austin, Minnesota. They lived in rural Greene, then moved to Rudd in 1855. Howard farmed his whole life and also worked in construction along with several other jobs over the years. He played fast-pitch softball and was on a bowling team. One of his biggest joys was watching his son, Joel, and teammates play baseball. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He was known to give a helping hand to anyone who needed it. and was well-liked. He had a wonderful sense of humor and story-telling. He is survived by his son and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers: Wilford, Russell and Dayle; four sisters: Edna Loucks, Ruth Shannon, Iva Stille and Blanche Hinders.
