HOWARD C. KENDALL, proprietor of the Duluth Transfer Company, was born at Monticello, Ind., Aug 25, 1848, as is a son of Charles W. and Eliza M. (Spencer) Kendall, both natives of Pennsylvania. The Kendall family is of English origin. Charles W. Kendall went to Indiana and located at Monticello when that part of the State was a wilderness. For some years he dealt in dry goods there, but at the time of his death, in 1875, he was engaged in banking. He accumulated a fortune from humble beginnings and commanded the respect and confidence of his fellow citizens. His wife survived him many years, passing away in 1901. She sprang of one of the oldest families in Maryland, some of her progenitors having emigrated to that Colony and settled in Cecil county in 1632. Her grandfather died while serving in Gen. Washington's army at Valley Forge. Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Kendall were the parents of three sons and three daughters, of whom we have the following record; Sally is the wife of A. W. Loughery, of Monticello, Ind.; Howard C; Charles W., of Duluth; May, Mrs. Harris McDowell, of Middletown, Del.; and Maria and Walter, who are deceased. Howard C. Kendall was educated in the public schools of his native place and in Wabash College at Crawfordsville, in the same Sate. After learning telegraphy on the lines of the Pennsylvania railroad he was employed for three years as train dispatcher on that system. Subsequently he was successively employed for intervals ranging from six months to three years each on the Rock Island system, at Des Moines, Iowa; on the Untion Pacific, at Omaha; in the president's off of the Burlington & Missouri; on the Hannibal & St. Joe; and the St. Paul & Pacific (now the Great Northern) at Anoka, Minn. His long and faithful service on these different roads amply entitled him to the position of ticket agent at the union deport in Duluth, which he accepted in 1874 and creditably filled for the next eight years. At the end of that period he started in the livery and transfer business with which he has ever since been connected. He began as a partner of James Caldwell, but for some years past has been the sole proprietor of the establishment. Besides doing a general transfer business, he conducts a first class livery stable, the oldest in the city. His teams are well cared for, his carriages are the best obtainable, and his patrons are always sure of receiving first-class service. In 1863 Mr. Kendall patriotically offered his services in defense of the Union, enlisting in Company E, 135th Ind. V. I., and served under Gen. Sherman until the close of the war, receiving a wound at Nashville which disabled him for a time. Since Coming to Duluth his fidelity and ability have been recognized by the numerous public trusts to which he has been elected. For six years he was member of the city council and for four years of that time was its president. He has also served four terms in the Minnesota Legislature, in 1879-80-81 and again in 1891. In political affiliation he has always been a consistent Republican. He is a member of the Uniform Rank, Knights of Pythias , and among his fraternal connections may be mentioned the Grand Army of the Republic and the Improved Order of Red Man. He is deservedly popular among his associates and merits all the trust reposed in him.
