He helped his father clear land after moving to Grant County in 1834. In young adulthood, he bought his own wooded acreage which he cleared for farming. Due to ongoing medical problems with ague, Howard moved his family west looking for a healthier country. He sold his improved acreage for a profit and moved to Henry County, Iowa in 1864. He bought 160 acres of prairie land and farmed this land. Howard sold his farm land in 1904 and moved to Washington County, Iowa. Howard was the son of Isaac Gay and Harriet (Josselyn) Carter. He married Eleanor Lyon, daughter of James and Nancy (Slater) Lyon, on February 18, 1851 in Grant County, Indiana. Howard and Eleanor had nine children: Nancy Mahala, Sarah Jane, Harriet Joanna, Leroy Perry, Rhoda Caroline, Mary Alice, William Elvin, George Henry, Eva Isadora. Howard married Martha Smith, daughter of Matthew R. and Esther Ann (Carter) Smith, February 12, 1888 in Washington County, Iowa. Howard and Martha did not have children. Martha was previously married to Jesse Lewis, son of William and Dorothy (Hedrick) Lewis. History of Isaac P. Mrs. Carter died in 1870. Mr Carter married in 1878, Mrs. A Perry, who was born in Ohio in 1827. Mrs. Carter is a member of the M. E. Church; he is a First-Day Advent. Illustrated. Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1879. _____ Howard Carter Dead Howard Carter passed way last night at 12 o'clock after a very brief illness of acute indigestion. Although he had not been well for the past three weeks, he was able to be about and was on the streets Saturday, but Saturday evening at about 5 o'clock he was taken suddenly ill and he rapidly grew worse yesterday. His extreme age made it impossible for him to rally against his affliction, and at midnight he quietly breathed his last. Howard Carter was born April 7, 1825 near Zanesville, Muskingum county, Ohio. In 1834, his father sold the farm in Ohio, and purchased land in Grant County, Indiana, and Howard, who was nine years of age, accompanied his father and an elder brother to the newly purchased land and helped in the work of clearing. They returned to their home in Ohio in the fall of the same year, and the following year they removed to Indiana with the entire family, which consisted of the father, mother and six sons. Mr. Carter endured the hardships of a pioneer life, and worked industriously in the work of clearing the ground and cultivation. On February 18, 1851, he was married to Eleanor Lyon, and to this union nine children were born, seven of whom are living: Mrs. Nancy M. Snell, Mrs. Sarah J. Seberg, Leroy P. Carter, Mrs. Rhoda C. Tallman, Mary A. Carter, George H. Carter and Mrs. Eva I. Anderson. In 1865, Mr. Carter and family came west, settling on a farm in Henry County, Iowa near Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Carter died in 1870 and on February 12, 1888, Mr. Carter married Mrs. Martha Smith Lewis, who survives him, and they made their home for a number of years on the Lewis farm in this county. In 1894 they moved to this city, and had lived here ever since. During Mr. carter's residence here he complied a book with the history of his family through five generations, and it is from this book that we have gleaned the information in regard to his life. The book was written during his eightieth year, and his memory was indeed remarkable. Early in life the deceased became a member of the Methodist Church, and at the time of his death he was identified with the old Christian church. During his whole life he was a devout and faithful filler of God's word, and was an excellent, honest and upright citizen. The funeral Arrangements have not yet been definitely made. The Evening Journal, Washington, May 6, 1907. _______ HOWARD CARTER, residing on section 12, Marion Township, is one of the early settlers of Henry County, Iowa. He was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, April 7, 1825, and is a son of Isaac G. and Harriet (Josselyn) Carter, both natives of Waldo County, Me. They both removed to Muskingum County, Ohio, when quite young, and Dec. 16, 1819, were married in Perry County, Ohio. He was the son of Isaac P. and Joanna (Gay) Carter, and was born Sept. 6, 1797. His wife was born June 9, 1802, and was the daughter of Joshua and Sarah (Chapman) Josselyn. Mr. and Mrs. Carter had a family of ten sons, the ﬁrst dying in infancy: Ira J., yet living on the old homestead in Grant County, Ind.; Howard, our subject, being third in order of birth; Joseph, a farmer of Cass County, Iowa; Elijah, a black smith of Jonesboro, Grant Co., Ind.; John H., a merchant of New Cumberland, Grant Co., Ind.; Albert died at the age of two, in Grant County, Ind.; Lewis, a farmer in Grant County, Ind.; Oliver , died at the age of twenty-four, in Grant County, l Ind.; Alfred died in infancy. The seven oldest of these children were born in Muskingum County, Ohio, and the three youngest in Grant County, Ind., Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Carter moved to Muskingum County, Ohio, where for a few years he engaged in brick-making. In the year 1835, with his wife and children he moved to Grant County, Ind., where he bought 160 acres of wild land, transforming it into a ﬁne farm. He was called to his ﬁnal home Jan. 29, 1869, at the age of seventy-two, his wife having preceded him six years, dying April 1, 1863, at the age of sixty-one. Mr. and Mrs. Carter were devoted members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was Steward for a number of years. Our subject received his education in the district schools of his native State. He remained with his parents until twenty-ﬁve years of age. He led to the marriage altar Miss Eleanor Lyon, on the 18th of February, 1851. She was a native of Ohio, having been born in Guernsey County, Jan. 22, 1831. Her parents were James and Nancy (Slater) Lyon, the father being a native of Virginia, and the mother of Ohio. Shortly after his marriage Mr. Carter with his young bride moved upon a farm that he had purchased of eighty acres. He added to this until he had 160 acres well cultivated. In 1864 he sold his farm and came to Henry County, and in June, 1865, moved upon the wild land of section 12, where he immediately began to break the sod and fence the wild prairies. Now his land is in excellent condition, and his buildings are models of convenience. He came to this county with his wife and eight children in the full hope and happiness of a bright future, but Nov. 24, 1870, his wife was taken from his happy home. She was an active worker in the Methodist Episcopal Church. In her death the husband lost a loving wife, the children a kind and indulgent mother. Mr. and Mrs. Carter were the parents of nine children: Nancy M., who was born in Grant County, Ind., Jan. 24, 1852, is the wife of William H. Snell, a farmer in Wayne Township, Henry Co., Iowa; Sarah J., born July 1, 1853, is the wife of John Seberg, a farmer in Kearney County, Neb.; Harriet J., born March 3, 1855, died Nov. 27, 1870; Leroy P., born Feb. 4, 1857, is a telegraph operator and Station Agent on the St. Paul & Duluth Railroad, at Sandstone Junction, Minn.; Rhoda C., born Nov. 6, 1858, is the wife of Frank Tallman, a farmer in Osborne County, Kan.; M. Alice. born Oct. 12, 1860, at home; William E., born Oct. 12, 1862, died May 1, 1887; George H., born April 8, 1865; Eva I., born July 25, 1867 in Henry County, Iowa, was married to Alfred H. Anderson, Jan. 4, 1888. Mr. Carter is now one of the prominent and well-to-do farmers of Henry County, but all that he has was made by his own frugality and industry. He has one of the most excellent farms in the county, and upon it may be found a good grade of horses, cattle and hogs. Mr. Carter has held various township offices of trust with credit to himself and his constituents. Politically he is a Republican. He contributes liberally to all charitable and public enterprises, and as a neighbor and citizen none stands higher than does Mr. Carter.
