Hinkley, a life long resident of this community, who has been confined to his home for nearly two years and to his bed for the past several months, passed away last Friday evening after having been in an unconscious state for about 24 hours. Up until a few weeks ago he did not seem to suffer much, but during the last few days he suffered considerable pain. Although his death was not unexpected, yet it brings with it a sting of sorrow and a vacant place in a home that can never be filled. He was a valuable citizen and will be missed not only in the home but in the community as well. Howard Collins Hinkley, youngest son of Henry L. and Hannah Hinkley was born on the Hinkley farm northwest of Lone Tree, August 15, 1870. He was united in marriage with Effie Patton on East Peru October 30, 1901. To this union four children were born, all of whom died in infancy. Following his marriage Mr. Hinkley remained on the home place farming in partnership with his father and following his father’s death in 1911, for himself. During 1916 he bought and moved to his present home in Lone Tree where he entered the insurance business in partnership with Mr. Charles Cipperley. Later he carried on the business alone. On April 9, 1923 Mr. Hinkley suffered a stroke of paralysis. Previous to this time he had hardly known a sick day. From this stroke he gradually recovered, only to be stricken a second time on November 23 of the same year. Although compelled to spend the winter in the house, he so far recovered that he was able to go out and about the house and make occasional trips down town during April, May and June. While visiting down town June 14, 1924 he was stricken a third time and since that time he has steadily grown weaker. A fourth stroke came on him gradually beginning about Thursday, January 28 and he was called to his reward at 8:15 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 1926, aged 55 years, 6 months and 21 days. He is survived by his wife, one brother, H. D. Hinklely of Sterling, Colorado and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Cipperley of Long Beach, California and a host of friends. Mr. Hinkley united with the Reformed church in Lone Tree in 1888 and has since been a true and faithful member. In 1919 he was ordained as deacon and has served in that capacity continuously ever since. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Rebekahs and the Modern Brotherhood of America. The funeral service was held from the Reformed church on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. E. Holyoke and burial was made in the Lone Tree cemetery. Music was furnished by a male quartette consisting of Forrest L. Atkin, Chas. A Hacke, C. J. Loehr and W. H. Yakish. The flower girls were Mrs. George Brolsma and Mrs. C. F. Werbach. The pallbearers were Henry Rossmann, Joe Henik, E. D. Carl, James Sims, Emil Person, Clarence Kranz. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. The sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of the Reporter editor and readers in the loss of this husband and brother.
