Howard was born on February 9, 1913, in Remsen, Iowa, the son of Clarence "C. W." and Josephine (Keiffer) Brotherton. Brotherton, age 93, of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at St. Anthony's Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. Howard was born on February 9, 1913, in Remsen, Iowa, the son of Clarence "C. W." and Josephine (Keiffer) Brotherton. He was baptized in the Catholic faith at St. Mary's in Remsen in February of 1913 and confirmed in 1923. He attended Remsen Saint Mary's Grade School and High School graduating in 1932. On December 31, 1934 he was united in marriage to Margaret "Peg" Howard at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, Iowa. This union was blessed with six children: Charles, Kenneth, Catherine, Judith, Janet, and Victoria. As a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wall Lake, Howard served on the building committee and was a member of the Knight's of Columbus. Howard was a lumberman and former owner of the Wall Lake Lumber Yard, which was established by his father, C. W. Brotherton. He enjoyed his many years in the lumber business, being involved with the community, (serving on the Wall Lake School Board) and making many life long friends. His son, Charles, took over the lumberyard when Howard retired in 1980. Howard's life was his work, but his love was his family. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He loved his family very much and cherished the time he could spend with them, especially family vacations at Clark Lake in Minnesota. He also enjoyed hunting in his earlier years and watching baseball games, especially if the Chicago Cubs were playing. Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Peg of Wall Lake; two sons: Charles Brotherton and wife Betty of Wall Lake; Kenneth Brotherton and wife Joanne of Pittsford, New York; Catherine Jungk and husband Bob of Platte City, Missouri; Judy Kingfield and husband Don of Algona, Iowa; Janet Olsen and husband Merritt of Friday Harbor, Washington; and Vicki Peyton and husband Larry of Sac City, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; nine step-great grandchildren; and two step great-great grandchildren; many extended family members; and a host of friends. Howard was preceded in death by his parents: two brothers: four sisters; and two grandchildren.
