Pastor Tera Kossow will officiate with burial to follow in the Bison Cemetery. Howard Edward Haugen was born June 15, 1922 on the Haugen farm south of Bison to Edward and Margaret (Englehart) Haugen. He was the oldest of three children. He attended grade school at Lone Tree and graduated from Bison High School. After graduation he stayed on the farm and helped the neighbors with odd jobs. He met the “love” of his life, Dorothy Hoar, at a dance and they continued to enjoy dancing the rest of their lives. They were married on September 1, 1946 in Bison. They purchased the farm from his parents shortly after their marriage and continued to live there raising their family. To this union two children were born: Betty June and Howard Allen. In the early years of their marriage Howard purchased an 8N Ford tractor with a two-bottom plow for $500. That was what he started farming with and for years to come. He continued to drive the tractor well into his 80’s. For extra cash he would go to the coal mine with a pick axe and shovel and load coal by hand into a grain truck, taking it to Bison selling it to those who were in need of coal. He was part of the original group that built the Bison Elevator. His son, Howard Allen, returned to the farm after college graduation. They farmed side by side for many years, enjoying the time spent together doing what they loved. Some of his hobbies included collecting toy tractors as well as restoring old farm tractors. There is a tractor in the garage waiting to be finished. Bowling was also a favorite pastime, bowling with Dorothy as often as they could on as many leagues as possible. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church. Howard served on the Lone Tree School Board, Lone Tree Township Board, Museum Board and Historical Society. He enjoyed attending threshing bees and auction sales. Howard and Dorothy moved into Bison in late December 2013. Although they enjoyed living in town the farm was always in their hearts. One of the highlights of their days was when their great grandkids would come to visit and enjoy a pop and doughnut with them. Little Henry was very special to him. When he saw him his eyes would light up. Failing health caused them to move into the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mott, ND. Howard passed away Sunday July 9, 2017, after saying good-bye to his beloved wife Dorothy of 70 ½ years. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Haugen; and three brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law. Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Services of Bowman in charge of the arrangements.
