Private family services will be held at Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa. There will be no public visitation. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. Private family services will be held at Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa. There will be no public visitation. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. He was born on Aug. 28, 1932, in Maquoketa, Hamilton Dean Elkins and Cora (Nieland) Elkins. He was a graduate of Maquoketa Community High School. He married Lois L. Clark on June 14, 1951, in Miles. Howard served one tour in the Army, stationed in Hawaii during the Korean War as a non-commissioned officer. While stationed there, his expertise in radio and communications repair served the United States greatly in repair of equipment damaged during the war. Howard was well-known in the Jackson County area as the owner of Howard's TV Service, which he operated for nearly 30 years. Always a keen observer of local, state and national politics. He served as the Maquoketa 2nd Ward Councilman for 10 years and as the mayor of Maquoketa for one term. Howard loved children, pets, traveling, history and the great outdoors. He was a world-class mushroom hunter and gardener. He loved his family most of all. His grandchildren held a very special place in his heart. He especially loved giving wheelbarrow rides, putting on Easter egg hunts and building mazes in the berry patch. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Lois; five children, Evelyn (David) Miller, of San Jose, Calif., Thomas (Lu Ann) Elkins, Nancy (Carl Alan) Muhlhausen, James (Jolene) Elkins and John Elkins (Joey Reid), all of Maquoketa; 13 grandchildren, Mike, Adam and Justin Elkins, Brian and Matt Schepers, Kalli, Maggi and Joni Muhlhaussen, Ryan, Keil, Jamie and Jenna Elkins, and Reese Elkins; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joan (Don "Bud" ) Miller, of Maquoketa. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul; and a sister, Arlene Ellis.
