Description	:	Howard Laney Killed in Highway Accident A most tragic death was that last Thursday of Howard B. Laney of Pageland who was fatally injured while engaged in work for the State Highway Department in the construction of Highway #9 at Lynches River. Mr. Laney was the driver of a truck and had just driven up to have his truck loaded with rock which was being hauled away from the excavation being made. Read More	Howard Laney Killed in Highway Accident A most tragic death was that last Thursday of Howard B. Laney of Pageland who was fatally injured while engaged in work for the State Highway Department in the construction of Highway #9 at Lynches River. Mr. Laney was the driver of a truck and had just driven up to have his truck loaded with rock which was being hauled away from the excavation being made. When as he got out of his truck, the dipper stick of the steam shovel broke loose and hit him on the back and arm. The accident occurred about noon and Mr. Laney was immediately rushed to a doctor's office here and then on to a hospital in Monroe. His injuries were at first not considered serious, but late in the afternoon it was discovered that he was internally injured. He was quickly operated on but died shortly after the operation or at about 8:30 o'clock that night. The funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Pageland Methodist Church of which Mr. Laney was a long faithful member and in which he had served Sunday school teacher. The services were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. L.B. Hammer, assisted by the Rev. J.C. Meigs. Interment followed at the Laney cemetery. Mr. Laney was 32 years of age and a son of the late J.A. Laney and Cora J. Mangum Laney. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lona Nicholson Laney, four children, Gerald, Doris, Charlton and Betty Jean,and the following brother and sisters, N.P. Laney, C.W. Laney, B.L. Laney, John D. Laney, all of Pageland; Sam B. Laney of Red Springs, North Carolina and Mrs. C.C. Hunt and Miss Carrie Laney, both of Durham, North Carolina.
