Phillips, 79, of Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at his home in Sioux Falls of natural causes. Howard Ingram Phillips, son of Charles "Del" and Marion (Brayford) Phillips, was born at home on Nov. 24, 1927, in rural Windthorst, Saskatchewan, Canada. He soon moved with his family to Souris, Manitoba as a small child and later to Nesbitt where he and his older brother Norman attended public school and high school. During his high school years Howard worked summers as an apprentice carpenter and after graduation he worked as a high lineman the Manitoba Power Commission Rural Electrification Construction Program. He also dabbled in racing cars and working as a private detective. Howard began his journalism career in 1945 in Winnipeg with the Tribune, a morning daily newspaper, first as a copy boy and then reporter. Over the next several years he worked at various newspapers across central and studios in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. In Victoria, 8.C., Howard owned and operated a portrait studio in the Hudson Bay Company Store, where he also did commercial and fashion photography for the "Bay." He often spoke fondly of the Vancouver and Victoria area. He loved South Dakota, but we believe Howard was always a Canadian at heart, he never gave up his "green card" and never became a U.S. citizen. In 1959, Howard began long haul trucking in partnership with friend Hans (a friend that we heard many tales of), transporting new automobiles between Windsor, Ontario, and Vancouver, BC. His travels soon led him to the Anderson Truck Stop in Sioux Falls (because Hans got lost), where he met his future wife Lynore Anderson. Lynore was the bookkeeper and office manager at her Father's truck stop. On July 11, 1960, Howard and Lynore were married in Swedona Church by Lynore's cousin Vernon Anderson. Lynore and Howard had three children: Shari, John and Melissa. John was born with cerebral palsy and was cared for at home by Lynore and Howard until he passed away in 1997 at the age of 33. In 1965, Howard resumed his journalism career as a photographer, reporter, editor with the Lyon County Reporter Weekly in Rock Rapids, Iowa. In order to be closer to home, Howard later accepted a position with the Argus Leader as a reporter, photographer, editor, and feature writer. After 76 months at the Argus Leader, Howard entered a new phase of his journalism career in television. During his 18 years at KELO-TV, Howard progressed from novice photographer to . reporter, photographer, lighting and set designer, quality control director and feature producer. From the White House to the palaces of the Orient to the Midde East. Howard photographed many members of royalty and Heads of State, and produced several feature length films for KELO-TV during which he traveled to many of the exotic countries of the world. After leaving KELO in 1984 Howard continued freelance photography and taught classes in photo journalism at Sioux Falls College and Augustana. Just last year he guest lectured at a SDSU photo-journalism class. A great story teller, Howard reveled in telling every account of his journeys in great detail to any willing audience. Sometimes the stories seemed beyond possible, but those that heard the stories more than once soon realized that he never wavered on the details. He and Lynore shared the same passion for antiques and auctions, (particularly china), great food, and shopping. He also loved fishing, sailing, and cars (old and new). Most don't know this, but, Howard too was an excellent cook. One of his signature dishes was B'eouf Bourguignonne. Being completely self taught in everything he did could probably be credited to his voracious love of reading anything and everything from mysteries to car repair manuals. Howard also dearly loved all animals. His canine companions over the years have included "Smokey" (who traveled in the truck cab), "Tiny" (our rat terrier), "King" (a wolf-mix we had at the farm), "Puppy" (a stray that was smart enough to find our doorstep and who also had puppies shortly after arriving), "Tiny" (another rat terrier), "Josie" (their exuberant standard poodle), and most recently "Charlie" (his Newfoundland). Cats inclucied "Noopie" (the fattest yellow cat anyone had ever seen), "Sheena" (a black short hair that ruled the roost), and "Puff" (a stray Maine Coone). Howard is survived by two daughters Melissa Phillips and Shari (Greg) Thornes; three grandsons Joshua Anderegg, Christopher Anderegg and Ryley Dunn, all of Brookings. Nephews Sheldon (Marta) Phillips of Thousand Oaks, CA, Andy Phillips of Los Lunas, NM, and niece Pam (Geno) Silva of Studio City, CA. Sister-in-law Helen Mae (Bob) Eleeson of Brandon and their children Steven Eleeson of Brandon. Dr. Susan Eleeson and her daughter Elise Maresh of Sioux Falls, and Sara (Eleeson) and husband Jay Eason and their twin sons Zane and Wyatt of Ankeny, IA; and sister-in-law Dorothy (Harlan) Wehde of Garretson, their grandson Justin Wehde of Garretson, and their daughter Lorrie (Wehde) and husband Dr. Derek Burdeny of Omaha. Howard is preceded in death by Lynore, who died last year on July 7, 2006 at the age of 75, his parents, brother Norman, son John, and nephew Bill Wehde. Contributed by Wendy Cole
