Born Sept. 2, 1909, in Jewell County, Kan., he was the youngest of seven sons and three daughters born to the late John G. and Lydia (Poorbaugh) Major. In 1918, his family moved to Nance County, Neb., where he graduated from Fullerton High School in 1927. He graduated from Zochol Business College in St. Paul, Neb. He married Florence (Powers) Major in 1936 and began a 39-year career with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, retiring as district director for the states of Kansas and Missouri in 1974. He was a member of Old Mission United Methodist Church, Fairway, where he had served on the Board of Trustees and the Administrative Board and had been treasurer of the Yankie Sunday School class for 20 years. He was a volunteer at the Lakeview Village Retirement Center where he resided with his wife for the past several years. He was preceded in death by a son, James Kent Major, in 1968. Survivors include the wife, Florence, of Lakeview Village; a daughter, Ann Childers, and her husband, Ben; a daughter, Linda McCreight, and her husband, Dick, grandsons Geoff and Christopher Childers and Kevin McCreight; a granddaughter Colleen Whitby; and great-grandchildren Joshua and Lindsey McCreight and Benjamin, Johnathan and Meghan Whitby.
