Howard Lester Gunnison Jr., 64, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, died on Friday, March 30, 2001 at St. Andrews Hospital. He was born on January 19, 1937 in York, Maine the son of the late Howard L. and Barbara L. Winningham Gunnison. He lived in Kittery and attended local schools. He was graduated from New England Institute in Boston. He was a funeral director, licensed in both Maine and Massachusetts. He was employed by the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, MCI Cedar Junction. He was also employed with his family business, Gunnison Motor Service, and was York County Deputy Sheriff in Bridgton, Maine. He and his wife summered in the Boothbay region for many years before retiring here from Wrentham, Mass. He was a railroad enthusiast. His hobby and love was working at the Edaville Railroad in South Carver, Mass. He was a member of the Mystic Valley Railroad Society and the Wiscasset-Waterville-Farmington Railway Society. He was a member of the Masons York and Scottish Rites, Swedish Square and Compass Club and was a past president. He was also a member of OES, Kiwanis and the Viking Club of Braintree, Mass. A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife of 37 years, Melba Lord Gunnison; three daughters, Cynthia Ann Whitman of Quincy, Mass., Wendy Barbara Gunnison of Wrentham, Mass. and Kristin Elaine Davis; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson; a brother, Robert Gunnison of Benson, Vt.; two sisters, Shirley Hamel of Pittsburg and Carol Drew of Kittery, Maine; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Howard's memory be made to St. Andrews Hospital, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or New England Home for Little Wanderers, 271 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115. A visiting hour was held on Monday, April 2 at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Government Street in Kittery. A funeral service followed. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay, Maine.
