Description	:	Truck kills flagman A La Crosse man, working as a flagman for the state Highway Department was struck and killed near Hamlet, police said. The victim, Howard L. (Smitty) Smith, 51, of 112 Iowa St., La Crosse, was on the job when a truck driven by Charles Hedger of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, pulled past stopped traffic and struck him. An assistant foreman for the Highway Department, he was a son of Everett and Lottie (Woodrum) Smith in Boswell and married Virginia Aigner Sept. 18, 1976, in La Crosse. He had worked for 18 years as a member of the plasters union in construction work and was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wiesjahn Funeral Home in Wanatah, the Rev. John Shortle of the La Crosse United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse. Visitation is after 3 p.m. until evening on Saturday and until time of services Sunday at the funeral home. Survivors include his wife; daughters Connie Smith of California and Cynthia Smith of Washington, D. C.; and three grandchildren. Obituary published in The Vidette-Messenger of Porter County (Valparaiso, IN), on Friday, June 30, 1978.
