Howard was born on August 12, 1943, to the late Lona Scott Green and the late John Howard Green at the Glover Clinic in Madison. Read More	After a courageous battle with cancer, Howard Lester Green entered eternal life on April 1, 2010. Howard was born on August 12, 1943, to the late Lona Scott Green and the late John Howard Green at the Glover Clinic in Madison. After graduating from Scott High School in 1961, Howard joined the Army on January 7, 1963, for two years. He went to basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., with eight weeks of additional training at Fort Polk, LA. On June 1, 1963, Howard arrived by ship on the European continent and then on June 13, 1963, he arrived in West Berlin, Germany, where he was stationed with a rank of Private First Class. He acted as a guard at Spandau Prison, guarding Rudolf Hess. Howard was an excellent runner and won many track races while in Germany. Howard returned to the U.S. in December 1964. He worked for a number of department stores after serving in the U.S. Army as a manager in the hardware department for Arlins, Montgomery Wards and Heck's. On October 28, 1968, Howard started working at Harris Mine No. 2 in Bald Knob, for Peabody Coal Company. He served numerous UMWA positions during his six years in the coalmines, including recording secretary, chairman of mine committee and chairman of the safety committee. Howard continued to serve the coal miners he loved when he was elected as UMWA field representative in July 1, 1974. While working as a field representative, Howard attended the University of Charleston and graduated cum laude with a BA degree in 1979 with a major in geography and minor in history. He served as a field representative until he was elected as UMWA vice president of District 17 in March 1983. Howard served in this position until he was elected as UMWA International Executive Board member in July 1985 and continued in this position until 1996, when he retired and was given the title International Executive Board Member Emeritus. During his time running for office to represent the miners he so loved, he ran unopposed many times. Howard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, Nancy, who died in 2003 of ALS. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Green Ortiz and her husband Erick of Charlotte, N.C., who are the parents of his two grandchildren, Angela and Anna; his brothers, Roger Green and his girlfriend Joan Walker of St. Albans, Emil McDorman and his wife Joan of Wharton, and Bob McDorman and his girlfriend Shirley of Man. A special word of thanks from the family to his good friend Stephen Toth of Lexington, S.C., who became his caregiver in June of 2009 after Howard was diagnosed with cancer. The family also expresses their deep appreciation and thanks to the following people: His UMWA Brothers who called and dropped by to visit Dr. Rosalyn Juergens of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at John Hopkins Dr. Shah and the Chemotherapy nurses at Thomas Cancer Center Dr. Ashhab and his team at CAMC Memorial Physical Therapists of Boone Sports Medicine The compassionate staff of Boone Memorial Hospital who cared for Howard so well Lloyd and Betsy Ayers who came to sit with Howard many times His many, many friends, who called, visited, sent a card, or rushed over to help us when Howard was having trouble. We are especially grateful to Donna Moats and Ronnie Walker, who came to help Howard in some of his difficult times. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Madison with Monsignor P. Edward Sadie and Father Soosai Arpudum Arokiadass officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorials may be made to either the UMWA in his memory or to St. Mary's Catholic Church. Arrangements are by Handley Funeral Home, Danville.
