He was baptized Feb. 11, 1919 at St. Paul Lutheran Church and attended the Lybrand School north of Postville. During WW II he served in the U.S. Navy as a Gunner's Mate 2/c. He was aboard the USS Maddox when it was sunk during the Invasion of Sicily. August 3, 1947 he was married to Rosamond Eckstein at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waverly.
