Condolences may be left at www.goettschonline.com Born to Alfred G. and Lena Osborne Remley in Anamosa on Aug. 26, 1914, he attended the Anamosa schools and the University of Iowa, where he received his B.A. degree in 1936 and his Juris Doctor degree in 1938. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of Coif. On July 5, 1941, he married Betty Jane Levsen in Wyoming. She survives him. Three children were born to them, David M. (Betsy) Remley of Anamosa, Jane L. (James) Rasley of Richardson, Texas, and Nancy (Harry) Remley-Whiteley, all of whom survive him. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Louise R. Scott of Hot Springs, Ark. Howard began the practice of law as a sole practitioner in 1939. He served in the F.B.I. and the U.S. Navy in World War II, returning to Anamosa, where he resumed the practice of law in successive partnership until his retirement in 1992. He was elected Jones County Attorney in 1956. He was a member of the Iowa and American Bar Associations, serving as president of the Iowa State Bar Associatio n in 1964 and 1965. He received the Iowa State Bar Association Award of Merit in 1973, and served on its governing and advisory boards. He served on the Iowa Court Study Commission, which led to the amendment of the Iowa Constitution and enabling legislation to provide for non-partisan selection of judges. As an active practitioner, he was a member of the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers and a fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Howard was long active in a wide spectrum of community and area organizations, programs, and causes. His memberships included Anamosa Lodge No. 46 A.F.&A.M. and the First Congregational United Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Scholarship Fund of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 152, Anamosa; or the book fund of the Anamosa Public Library, 100 East First St., Anamosa.
