Howard McKenzie Sr., 64, of Jamestown, plumber at the State Hospital, died suddenly Thursday after suffering a heart attack while at work. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Eddy Funeral Chapel with Rev. Edward J. Hoag, minister of the United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery. Born August 1899, at Pingree, Mr. McKenzie was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman J. McKenzie. He attended school in Pingree. In World War I, he enlisted at Fargo on June 21, 1918, and was sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He served in the 33rd Labor Regiment to July 22, 1918; the Military Police at Camp Joseph E. Johnson, Florida; to September 7, 1918, and in Supply Company 332, Quartermaster Corps, until his discharge at Camp Dodge, Iowa, as private first class on September 16, 1919. He served overseas from Oct 6, 1918 to September 7, 1919. After his return from army service, Mr. McKenzie farmed near Pingree and later worked as a plumber. From 1924 to 1928 he worked for the Buchanan Elevator Company, and from 1928 to 1934 he managed the elevator at Parkhurst. He came to Jamestown in 1934, where he was employed as custodian at the Post Office until enlisting in the Army in World War II in June, 1942. After his discharge, he was employed in the Railway Mail Service for a short time before staring his own Plumbing and Heating Service here. He began employment as a plumber at the State Hospital in 1952 where he had worked since. Mr. McKenzie was married to Clara Wyatt in Jamestown on April 26, 1920. She died December 13, 1951. His marriage to Mrs. Bertha Hertel took place here on October 11, 1955. Mr. McKenzie was a member of Ernest DeNault Robertson Post 14, American Legion, and World War I Veterans. He is survived by his wife; five children; Howard McKenzie Jr., Jamestown; Rev. Robert McKenzie, on the staff of Whitman College, Walla Walla, Washington; Mrs. Charles McAlpin (Mary) Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Jack Kick (Jean), Waterford, N.Y. and James McKenzie, Minot; five step-children, Elmer Hertel, Edmunds; Mrs. Palmer Jensen (Doris) and Mrs. John Fruhwirth (Elaine), Lakewood, California; Clarence Hertel, Jamestown, and Mrs. Roger Sims (Kay) Long Beach, California; 12 grandchildren and 10 step-grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur McKenzie, Pingree, and Walter McKenzie, San Fernando, California, and two sisters, Mrs. Dick Hertel (Ethel) Portland, Oregon; and Mrs. William Tolson (Ruth) Palos Verdos, California. He was preceded in death by a son, Norman, in 1942, his parents and one sister. FUNERAL SERVICES HELD TUESDAY FOR HOWARD McKENZIE SR. Funeral services for Howard McKenzie Sr., of Jamestown, State Hospital employee, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Eddy Funeral Chapel with Rev. Edward J. Hoag, minister of the United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Mr. McKenzie died unexpectedly Thursday after suffering a heart attack while at work. Mrs. N.E. McCoy played a program of organ music as friends assembled and left the chapel. Rev. and Mrs. McCoy sang, "City Four Square," and "Beyond the Sunset." Pallbearers were George Van Erem, Luther Bonham, John Sundet, A.A. Gaustad, Herman Beckman and Leslie G. Gasal. Following committal services at Highland Home Cemetery, military rites were conducted by the American Legion and local National Guard units. Color bearers from the American Legion were Paul Senne and Edgar Anderson; color guard, Legion, Harold Braniff and Robert Radke. The firing squad from the National Guard units, with SFC James Telken in charge, was composed of Plattoon Sgt. Riley Blackmore, Staff Sgt. Edwin Matchey, Staff Sgt. George Gray, Sgt. Robert Tarno, SP-5 Allen Neumann, and Staff Sgt. Harold Utecht. Taps was sounded by Don Altringer. The flag was folded by Robert Kiernan, commander of Ernest DeNault Robertson Post 14, American Legion, and Platoon Sgt. Blackmore and presented to Mrs. McKenzie by Kiernan. Members of Ernest DeNault Robertson Post, Amercian Legion, World War I Veterans, and associates in the plumbing department at the State Hospital, attended the services in a body. Relatives and friends from out of town attending the funeral included Rev. and Mrs. Robert McKenzie, Norman, Douglas, John and Julie; Walla Walla, Washington; Mr. and Mrs. John Kick, Rochester, NY; Mr. and Mrs. Charles McAlpin, Joan and Charles Jr., Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Palmer Jensen, Long Beach, California; James McKenzie, Minot; Mrs. Gertrude Strand, Grand Rapids, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McKenzie and family, Pingree; Mrs. Dan Hertel, Mr and Mrs John Hertel, Mr and Mrs Harold Hertel, Carrington; Mr and Mrs Elmer Hertel, Mr and Mrs Ernest Siebert, Edmunds; Mr and Mrs Warren Bowe and family, Crookston, Minnesota and Mike Greitl, Fargo.
