He was born June 28, 1921, in Wells County, North Dakota to Nels and Anna (Pedersen) Andersen and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and worked as a mail handler and head train checker for Union Pacific Railroad for more than 30 years before his retirement in June 1983. Andersen, 81, of Missouri Valley died April 24 at Longview Nursing Home. He was born June 28, 1921, in Wells County, North Dakota to Nels and Anna (Pedersen) Andersen and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and worked as a mail handler and head train checker for Union Pacific Railroad for more than 30 years before his retirement in June 1983. He was a member of Queen of Apostles Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 737 and was an avid bowler. Mr. Andersen was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel, in 1993. Survivors include a daughter, Stella Knott and husband James Knott of Council Bluffs; two sons, Robert Andersen and wife Natalia of Springfield, Va., and Craig Andersen and wife Joan of Fort Worth, Texas; three sisters, Margaret Sweet and Irene Stephens, both of Medford, Ore., and Sally Andersen of Phoenix, Ore.; a brother, Alvin Andersen of California; seven grandchildren, Alicia Jones, Mary Marsolais, Katie Knott, Barry Andersen, Erica Andersen, Amelia Andersen and Jessica Andersen; nieces; and nephews. Visitation with the family will be Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home in Council Bluffs. A wake service will follow at 4 p.m. The funeral Mass will be Monday at noon at Queen of Apostles Church with the Rev. Dan Kirby, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post No. 2. Memorials may be offered to Queen of Apostles Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
