He died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Community Pride Care Center. Howard was born on Oct. 23, 1932, at Battle Creek, the son of John M. and Lydia (Hohenstein) Praeuner. He graduated from Battle Creek High School and then attended Midland College for two years. He married Phyllis Jean Glandt on May 27, 1956, at Battle Creek. They farmed for almost 40 years on a farm south of Battle Creek and were married almost 52 years together. They retired from farming and built a house in Battle Creek in 1995. Howard was a life-long citizen of Battle Creek and was involved in community, church, and civic endeavors giving freely of his time. Over the years, he held every office on the St. John's Church Board except for secretary. Some offices he held more than once. He served on the Battle Creek Co-op board of directors for 24 years, some of which he served as president. He enjoyed serving on the Lutheran Hospital board of directors for 11 years and then continued on for five more years at Faith Regional Health Services after the two hospitals in Norfolk merged. He served on the building committee for the new Battle Creek High School. Howard volunteered for the "Parks of Pride" and was a "Friend of the Park" that helped with upkeep of the Battle Creek City Park. He and his wife were recognized as the 2001 Outstanding Citizens by the Battle Creek Betterment Club for all their volunteer work and community involvement. His hobbies were reading and enjoying the game of golf, and attending sporting events for his children, grandchildren and the local high school. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Battle Creek, and their three children, Wendy Bowman of Tampa, Fla., Wade and Kelley Praeuner of Olathe, Kan., and Wanda and Marty Mullins of Omaha. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, John Praeuner and his wife Chelsea, Mitchell Praeuner, Brittni and Meagan Johnson, Jake and Luke Mullins, and Chad Bowman. Howard has one sister, Mrs. Shirley (Dennis) O'Brien of Warsaw, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents.
