Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2014, at Hayti Lutheran Church in Hayti, SD. Rev. Randy Eisenbeisz will officiate. Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Monday prior to services. Burial will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery in rural Hayti. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Cook-Olsen Post #217 of the American Legion of Hayti. Active pallbearers will be: Todd Reese, Bill McDonald, Dave Adams, Michael Nelson, Brett McDonald, Jay Lenigan and Rich Krause. Memorials may be directed to the Pioneer Cemetery near Irene, SD. Howard was born March 29, 1932, in Wessington Springs, SD, to Martin and Josie (Pederson) Reese. He grew up on a farm southwest of Wessington Springs until moving with his family to a farm east of Hayti when he was 16 years old. He graduated from Hayti High School in 1950 and farmed with his father until joining the U.S. Army in 1952, serving until 1954, during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, Howard attended South Dakota State College in Brookings, SD, graduating in 1958. He then worked for the U.S. Corps of Engineers for 37 years, retiring in 1995. On November 7, 1959, Howard married Nadine Royer at Council Bluffs, IA. The couple had three daughters. Howard's employment took the family to Omaha, NE, Tulsa, OK, Dallas, TX, Chicago, IL, Davis, CA, and then back to Iowa. Howard later moved to Omaha and married Miriam Krauter on January 12, 1980, at Honey Creek, IA. They lived in Omaha until moving to Lake Poinsett upon retirement. Miriam passed away on January 26, 2008. Howard then lived in Hayti and Watertown before moving back to Omaha in March 2014, after becoming ill. Howard was a member of the Hayti Lutheran Church and was active in the Hayti American Legion, Hayti Historical Society, Pleasant View Cemetery Association and Sons of Norway in Brookings. He enjoyed trips to England, Scotland and Norway. He loved golfing, bowling, playing cards and hunting pheasants, as well as reminiscing with family and friends. Howard is survived by his three daughters: Robin (David) Adams of Manilla, IA, Ronda Nelson of Carter Lake, IA, and Renae (Bill) McDonald of Olathe, Kansas; eight grandchildren: Erin Adams, Krystin Adams, Michael Nelson and fiance, Stephanie, Amber Nelson, Matthew (Raven) Nelson, Brett McDonald, Nathan McDonald and Kaitlyn McDonald; three great-grandchildren: Mason, Jaden and Braxten; two sisters: Pauline (Bob Strait) of Lake Poinsett, and Joyce (Gordon) Stolp of Custer, SD; a special niece and nephew: Tammi (Rich) Krause and Todd Reese; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Miriam, his parents, and one brother, Vernon.
