Posted Jun 01, 2010 @ 11:32 PM, Wednesday June 02, 2010 "PITTSBURG — Howard Vincent Bolin, 93, of Pittsburg, passed away at 12:20 a.m., Monday, May 31, 2010, at Via Christi Hospital at Pittsburg. He was born May 10, 1917, at Nolansburg, KY, the son of George W. and Lulu Viola (Ewing) Bolin. He attended schools in Loyall, KY and Pennington, VA. At age 17 he moved to Walnut, KS and served four years in C.C.C. Camps in NE, ID, and Farlington, KS. Mr. Bolin married Ida A. Reece at Erie, KS, in 1939. She preceded him in death in 1964. He then married Helen O. Dell at Miami, OK, in 1979. She preceded him in death in 2005. Membership was held in the Central Christian Center of Joplin, MO, Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post NO. 64 of Pittsburg, Post Noble Grand of Odd Fellows Lodge of Erie, KS, and the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge. Mr. Bolin worked as a coal miner in KY, and VA. He also worked for the Ammunition Plant in Parsons, KS. He was then called to serve in the United States Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He went to work in the grocery business until he was called to serve in the Korean War. There he received a Korean Medal and United Nations Medal. After returning home he drove a creamy truck for Oldham's for 17 1/2 years. He then worked for the Morning Sun Newspaper for 11 years until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Bolin is survived by a brother, Ray Bolin of Girard, KS, step-daughter, Denise Smith of Cherokee, KS, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Arnold Bolin, and sister, Beatrice Bowin. Graveside services are set for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg, with Reverend Daryl Gaddy conducting the service. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery. The Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post NO. 64 of Pittsburg will conduct the flag folding ceremony. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 2, to sign the register book. The family suggests memorials to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Fund. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Online condolences may also be left at www.brennermortuary.com. (Brenner site has his photo.) Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS."
