Description	:	Howard was born Jan. 27, 1917, at Clear Creek near Colfax to Ellis Edgar and Ebba Bernice Halling Abbott. He attended Bethel School near Colfax and graduated from Colfax High School in 1935. He enlisted in the Washington State National Guard in 1937 and then the U.S. Army in 1940. At the outbreak of World War II in December 1941, he was assigned to serve at Pearl Harbor. Early in 1942 he was reassigned to officer's candidate school at Fort Benning, Ga. He served in the Pacific Theater and saw combat as an infantry company commander with the 32nd Infantry... He attended Bethel School near Colfax and graduated from Colfax High School in 1935. He enlisted in the Washington State National Guard in 1937 and then the U.S. Army in 1940. At the outbreak of World War II in December 1941, he was assigned to serve at Pearl Harbor. Early in 1942 he was reassigned to officer's candidate school at Fort Benning, Ga. He served in the Pacific Theater and saw combat as an infantry company commander with the 32nd Infantry Division in New Guinea and The Philippines. He received the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars. From 1945 to late 1946 he served as a staff officer in the Army of Occupation in Japan. He returned to the United States and had various careers, including farmer, mechanic, Colfax policeman, blacksmith and chief deputy sheriff for Whitman County. He was elected Whitman County clerk in 1970 and served for 14 years, retiring in 1984. He married Dorothy Mae Pendergrass Sept. 6, 1941, at Colfax. He was a member of Colfax United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Odd Fellows, Washington State Clerk's Association, North and South Palouse Grange, Kiwanis and the North American Hunting Club. He was a member of the National Rifle Association for more than 50 years. He served as Colfax president and district lieutenant governor for the Kiwanis and chief examiner for several years for the Civil Service Commission. He was an avid hunter in his younger years. He enjoyed muzzle-loading, fishing and making items in his home workshop. Survivors names omitted per findagrave policy. One granddaughter and two brothers, Ed and Dick Abbott, died previously.
