Carpenter, who has been in the employ of Mrs. Tom Ackard, of Levant, went wrong in the upper story and securing a shot gun, fired a couple shots at Mrs. Ackard through a glass door at the Ackard home, the shot striking her in the head and shoulder. Suddenly coming to his senses and realizing the crime he had committed, he hastily got Mrs. Ackard and her daughter, Alta in a car and started for Colby to obtain medical aid. After driving a short distance he felt that it would not do for him to drive them to Colby as he would immediately be placed under arrest, so he made his passengers get out of the car and he started to make his getaway. Remorse getting the better of him he decided to end it all by cutting his throat, making a desperate attempt which did not prove fatal as he failed to strike one of the main arteries. Tying a handkerchief tightly around his throat he drove into McDonald where he bought gas for his car, thence to Benkleman where he purchased another shot gun and drove to a point near Wray, Colorado, where he got out of his car and placing the butt of the gun against a car wheel and the muzzle against his head, fired the shot which ended his life, blowing the top of his head completely off. Mrs. Ackard and her daughter were rescued by a neighbor and taken to Colby, to the hospital, where it is reported that Mrs. Ackard is not seriously wounded as the shots were fired from a .410 gauge gun through a glass door which deflected most of the shot, and that she will be well again in a few days. At the time of the shooting, Mrs. Ackard and her daughter were alone at home, her son Bob, being at a basketball game at Oakley.
