Born December 8, 1951, in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Hubert E.“Nick” Harrison Sr., and the late Elizabeth E. Stottlemyer Harrison. He attended Washington Street School and was a 1969 graduate of North Hagerstown High School. Junior was an avid member of the Boy Scouts of America throughout his adolescence. He enjoyed summers at Sinoquipe and also served as an assistant Scout Master. He loved playing baseball as a child, and fondly recalled many memories as a member of teams at the West End Little League, and Hagerstown Pony and Colt Leagues. A 29-year member of the Baltimore County Fire Department, JR served as a paramedic for many years before being promoted to paramedic/firefighter in 2004. He achieved the rank of lieutenant in 2009. His passion for rescuing people started with his membership in the heavy duty rescue group known as Civil Defense from 1968-1974. Shortly after that, he joined Community Rescue Service as a volunteer. In the mid-1970s, when Maryland started its Emergency Medical Services program, he was one of the earliest trainees to be certified as an EMT and paramedic. He attended and graduated from the Baltimore County Fire Department Training Academy in October of 1986. He proudly served the Baltimore County Fire Department at many stations, while continuing his service locally with Community Rescue in Hagerstown and Maugansville. He was a member of the IAFF. JR loved riding his motorcycle and was proud to have done so throughout the 48 contiguous states. He was an active member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, and participated in the God Bless America Veterans ride with his grandson the last several years. JR enjoyed deer and turkey hunting, and was a longtime member of the Greencastle Sportsmans Club. He also played slow-pitch softball for many years and was an organizer of the Washington County Emergency Services Softball League. In recent years, he loved spending his free time planning trips and traveling with Susan. The visitation will be held at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, on Thursday, August 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, August 28, at 12 p.m. Interment will follow at Beaver Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Rescue Service, 110 Eastern Blvd N, Hagerstown, MD 21740. Condolences for the family may be offered online at www.douglasfiery.com.
