Description	:	Hugh was married first, to Sarah Ann Henderson on 26 Dec 1854; second to Martha Huldah Logan Riley; lastly to Lucy Anna Logan, Martha Huldah's sister. As South Carolina's marriage records were not strictly regulated in the early years, the dates of these marriages are unknown. At 34, Hugh enlisted for the Confederacy and served with Co. As South Carolina's marriage records were not strictly regulated in the early years, the dates of these marriages are unknown. At 34, Hugh enlisted for the Confederacy and served with Co. C, 6 South Carolina Cavalry (Aiken's Reg't Partisan Rangers) (1 S. C. Partisan Rangers)(formerly 16 Batt'n S. C. Partisan Rangers). He enrolled at Abbeville for the period of the war on 15 Jun 1862 and was mustered in at Columbia, S. C. on 18 Jul 1862. Hugh was on sick furlough between May and June of 1863, but was back with his unit by July. In Nov & Dec 1863, he was on detachment to "buy beeves for Regt". On 8 Jun 1864, Hugh was admitted to General Hosp. No. 9, Richmond, VA; then transferred on Jun 16th to Jackson Hospital, Richmond with chronic rheumatism. He was again hospitalized on 20 Sep 1864. On Oct 17, 1864, he appears on a register of the C. S. A. General Hospital, Danville, Va. with acute rheumatism and was transferred to Raleigh, N. C. on 26 Nov 1864. Hugh was furloughed on 15 Feb 1865 for 60 days with chronic rheumatism. The above information was obtained from H. B. Maxwell's compiled military service record. By this time, the war was, of course, nearing an end. The following obituary is from the Charleston News and Courier, Jan 18, 1903: H. B. Maxwell died at 1 o'clock yesterday morning at the residence of his son, John L. Maxwell, in this city. Mr. Maxwell had been in failing health and his death was not unexpected. He was 71 years old. A few years ago he moved from Phoenix to Greenwood and made his home first with his daughter, Mrs. A. J. Quattlebaum, and then with his son, John L. Maxwell. Several years ago Mr. Maxwell lost the use of both eyes. He was thrice married and leaves the following children: Mrs. A. J. Quattlebaum of this city; Mrs. Andrew Deas, of Augusta; Miss Lula of Augusta; H. H. and John L. and Miss Daisy Maxwell of this city; Thomas H. and Joe L. Maxwell, of Abbeville. Mr. Maxwell was a consistent member of the Baptist Church, and lived an earnest, Christian life. He was greatly esteemed by all who knew him. The following is information which was not mentioned in the above obituary, but was published by The State, Jan 17, 1903: Mr. Maxwell conducted a farm while at Phoenix, but upon the death of wife, he gave up farming and moved here as stated above. The funeral will take place today at 11 o'clock from Damascus Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. J. S. Jordan, for many years the pastor of the deceased.
