Description	:	Hugh Bowlby Willson was a barrister, author, journalist, and businessman. The 2nd son of John Willson and Elizabeth [née Bowlby] Willson, he was born on September 15th 1813 in Saltfleet, Ontario, Canada. His father, a well known politician, justice of the peace and member of Parliament. Hugh was educated at local schools and developed a keen interest in the economic ideas of Adam Smith. Read More	Hugh Bowlby Willson was a barrister, author, journalist, and businessman. The 2nd son of John Willson and Elizabeth [née Bowlby] Willson, he was born on September 15th 1813 in Saltfleet, Ontario, Canada. His father, a well known politician, justice of the peace and member of Parliament. Hugh was educated at local schools and developed a keen interest in the economic ideas of Adam Smith. At a young age he served briefly in politics, was a a purser on a steamer on Lake Ontario. In 1836 he began to study law and was admitted to the bar in 1841. He speculated in land during the mid-1840's and worked for a mining company. Never settling on one career, Hugh Willson became a journalist and began writing about trade, monetary issues and Canada's independence from Great Britain. He held various patents for railway rails and became interested in underground subway systems. Hugh Willson moved to Washington, D.C., before the Civil War and married Harriot Conway Ladd of that city on October 24th 1855. He later settled in New York City but continued to follow Canadian affairs and to write for the Hamilton Spectator. He had sophisticated and advanced ideas on monetary theory, and was a persistent advocate of reform of the money and banking system in both the United States and Great Britain. He became deeply involved in the postwar “Greenback” controversy in the United States. Throughout his adult life, Hugh Bowlby Willson helped to influence the issues of the day. He died in New York City on the 29th of April 1880. He was survived by his wife, Harriet and two adopted children. His remains were laid to rest in the Willson Family plot at Saint Andrew's Anglican Church Cemetery in Grimsby.
