Sayler was born Feb. 10, 1944, at Underwood to Calvin and Ethel (Renfrow) Sayler. He attended school in Underwood and graduated from Underwood High School in 1961. He attended Bismarck Junior College for one year prior to returning to Underwood to work with his father. He married on June 30, 1969. The couple made their home in Underwood. He worked as a carpenter for Great Plains Lumber Supply and later he was employed as a carpenter/contractor with the Layton Freborg Construction Co. of Underwood. Hugh offered his time and talent to many community volunteer services. He was instrumental in the development of the Underwood Ambulance Service and Rescue Squad. He served as a volunteer fireman and a certified emergency medical technician for 33 years. During his tenure, Hugh served as a fire chief, assistant fire chief, fire-training officer and certified auto extrication instructor. Hugh was an honest volunteer who gave countless hours without regret to a service that he mentored and respected. His love of emergency services has been instilled in his son, Jerry. Hugh was a lifetime member of the North Dakota Firefighters Association and a charter member of the McLean County Racers Association. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Washburn and served on the church council. Hugh enjoyed the North Dakota outdoors, where he could hunt, fish and play golf. He also enjoyed woodworking and will be remembered most for the woodworking projects he completed for his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Cottingham Sayler, Underwood; one daughter, Lynette Sayler, Valley City; one son, Jerry Sayler, Underwood; his mother, Ethel Sayler, Underwood; one brother and sister-in-law, Osby and Marietta Sayler, Jacksonville, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
