Description	:	CORKUM, Hugh H. - 78, 12 Maple Ave., Lunenburg, died Monday at home. Born in Conquerall Bank, Lunenburg County, he was a son of the late Capt. George and Ethelinda (Weagle) Corkum. He graduated from Lunenburg Academy. He sailed on various fishing vessels out of Lunenburg, 1918-38. In 1939 he became a policeman in Lunenburg and in 1941 was appointed chief of police. He was appointed president of Maritime Chiefs of Police in 1957 and retired as chief of police in 1976. Born in Conquerall Bank, Lunenburg County, he was a son of the late Capt. George and Ethelinda (Weagle) Corkum. He graduated from Lunenburg Academy. He sailed on various fishing vessels out of Lunenburg, 1918-38. In 1939 he became a policeman in Lunenburg and in 1941 was appointed chief of police. He was appointed president of Maritime Chiefs of Police in 1957 and retired as chief of police in 1976. Active in community affairs, he was a member, elder and clerk of session of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church for many years. From 1947-50 he was tax collector for the County of Lunenburg and later served as tax collector, truant officer and sanitary inspector for the Town of Lunenburg. He was chairman of swimming and water safety commitee for the Red Cross and was past president of Lunenburg Board of Trade, and served with the tourist committee for many years. He was 56-year member and past master of Unity Masonic Lodge 4, and a grand lodge appointment. He was a founding member and served as past president of Nova Scotia Amateur Radio Association and their license plate registrar. He was author of 'Both Sides of the Law'. He is survived by his wife, the former Natalie Bachman; a daughter, Sandra (Mrs. William Veenstra), Ross River, Yukon; a son, Constable Hugh A., Halifax; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Corkum, Halifax; Mrs. Beulah McKenzie, Fredericton, N.B.; four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Annie Black. The body is in Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg, visiting 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Laurence Mawhinney officiating. Burial in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg or Lunenburg Fire Department.
