Description	:	WINTHROP - Hugh Holmes, 72, passed away on March 31, 2012 at his home. Hugh was born on April 19, 1939 in Belfast, the son of the late Frank and Mattie Elizabeth (Buswell) Holmes. He graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast in 1958, and began a fulfilling lifetime of family, work and volunteer activities. Hugh was born on April 19, 1939 in Belfast, the son of the late Frank and Mattie Elizabeth (Buswell) Holmes. He graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast in 1958, and began a fulfilling lifetime of family, work and volunteer activities. He started his career working for Cottle's Supermarket in Belfast, and later became manager of the stores on Willow Street and Turnpike Mall in Augusta where he worked for more than 25 years. Hugh fed his deep entrepreneurial spirit with "Maine Pride Market" in Farmingdale that he and his wife, Jean, ran for more than a decade. Later, he was a top selling candy distributor for Nestle for more than 15 years. He was a very proud member of the Augusta Kiwanis Club for more than 40 years, with perfect attendance for nearly 30 of those years. There are very few Kiwanis activities that have not benefited from his leadership. Hugh was the club president in 1969, active in the past presidents club, including serving as its president in 1987. He served with distinction in the Kiwanis Scholarship Foundation, and was particularly proud of his annual involvement with the annual Kiwanis charity auction. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Jean A. (Castle) Holmes, of Winthrop; his daughter, Cheryl A. Holmes, of Augusta; his son, Jeffrey A. Holmes, and his wife, Melissa, of Wakefield, Mass.; his sister, Dixie L. Saraiva, and her husband, Ernest, of Montville; and three grandchildren, Alex Dow, Charlotte Holmes and Calvin Holmes. A graveside service will be held in May in Grove Cemetery, Belfast. (Kennebec Journal 4/2/2012)
