Gillen was born February 24, 1920, at Council Bluffs, a son of Hugh J. and Letitia (Gray) Gillen: He attended Belle Plaine schools and was a graduate of Belle Plaine High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was an employee of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 40 years, retiring as a conductor: Gillen was a retired member of the Veteran's Association of Chicago Northwestern Employees; U.T.U. (formerly the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen); the Moose Lodge; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mason City; and American Legion Post #39 and the Masonic Lodge at Belle Plaine. He was a 25-year member of the Belle Plaine Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Maureen; a stepdaughter, Nancy Hall of San Francisco, California; a sister, Dorothy Figgins, and a brother, Robert Gillen, both of Mason City. He was preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Gladys; an infant daughter; and a brother, Gene. A memorial fund has been established. Hogan-Bremer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
