CALEDONIA by Julie Smith The Grand Press Friends, family and colleagues of Hugh Kegerreis remember a well-known and respected village leader who served his community for almost a quarter century. Kegerreis, 82, died Wednesday. He battled Alzheimers disease for three years and suffered a heart attack two weeks ago. Kegerreis served 24 years in Caledonia politics. He was appointed to the village council in 1969, then successfully ran for president in 1970. He served in that role until he was defeated in a close race with Glen Klaver in 1986. He remained on the council until 1993. Jan Soules, who served with Kegerreis on the council, said completing the wastewater treatment plant was one of his greatest accomplishments. "He knew everything that there was to know about the plan out there," Soules said. At Christmas time, Soules recalls Kegerreis giving out handmade gifts, such as rugs or porcelain items, to the village office staff. "He was a very nice man," she said. Jay Shook also served on the council and is a distant relative of Kegerreis. Shook described him as a gentleman's gentleman and said he was an effective, fiscally responsible leaded. "I remember him as being conscientious for the village and quite conservative," he said. Kegerreis was a radar technician and instructor in the Army Air Corps during World War II and retired from an automobile and farm equipment parts business. Kegerreis ran the former Standard gas station on the northwest corner of Main and M-37 about ten years with his father and also served as a bus driver for the Caledonia schools. He is survived by his wife, Joan. The couple were avid travelers, visiting Europe, Australia, the Bahamas, Jamaica and several states and Canadian provinces. They were longtime members of the Caledonia United Methodist Church and were married in 1951. Visitation is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home in Caledonia, 616 E. Main St. SE. The service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday.
