ELIZA JANE REID OF GROUT ALSO CROSS THE GREAT DIVIDE. Hugh L. Oliver, a resident of Gladwin county since 1887, and one of the first to buy land and commence a farm in the Arbutus settlement, Buckeye, died Feb. 4, at his home in Arbutus of pneumonia, the result of a cold contracted a week before. Mr. Oliver was the leading spirit o his neighborhood, which was widely known as the Oliver settlement. Before the days of rural routes a postoffice on his farm was known as Arbutus, of which he was postmaster. Mr. Oliver had also been supervisor of his township, and filled various official position. He had made a good farm and home at Arbutus, where he lived 26 years. Mr. Oliver was born in Fredericksburg, Ontario, Dec. 17, 1859, and at time of his death was aged 55 years, 1 month and 17 days. When a year old he went with his parents to Sanilac county, Michigan, living there until, nine years of age, then moving to Newaygo county, where he lived until he moved to Gladwin county. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Ostrander in Macomb county July 3, 1882. To this union were born four daughters, all of whom with their mother are living. They are Mrs. Robert Morris of Beaverton, Mrs. James Cottrell of Holly, Miss Juna and Miss Fern at home; also four granddaughters, and three brothers and three sisters. Mr. Oliver was a devoted husband and father , and many will remember him for his kind acts, as he was always ready to extend a helping hand to the needy as well as to assist in public matters. He was a member of Gladwin lodge I.O.O.F. and Beaverton lodge F. & A.M. Funeral services were held Sunday. after short services at the house the body was taken to the Presbyterian church, Beaverton, where services were also had and many paid their respects previous to the burial at Dale.
