Read More	Georgetown Times December 19 1939 Father and Son are drowned in Sunday Tragedy Two lose lives when boat turns over in North Santee River Buried on Tuesday Bodies recovered Monday afternoon by searching parties dragging bottom of stream A tragic double drowning in North Santee river Sunday afternoon which shocked the entire community, tood the lives of H Lawson Oliver Jr forty year old Georgetown civil engineer and his ten year old son Hugh Lawson Oliver III. The tragedy occured about five o'clock two miles up the river from the bridge on United State Highway 17. The two accompanied by Clyde Dusenbury and two Negros, Elias Collins sixty nine, and his son Rainey, twenty, had gone to Goat Island between the North and South Santee rivers to cut a block of gumwood which Mr. Oliver intended to use in an effort to bring a veneer plant to Georgetown. As the party in a large batteau with an outboard motor emerged from Goat Island Creek into the swiftly moving North Santee the bow of the boat heavily loaded with the five persons and a 300 pound gum block was suddenly sucked under by an eddy and the occupants thrown into the water. Mr. Oliver was drowned in a futile effort to save his son. Mr. Dusenbury and Rainey Collins barely made it back to Goat Island while Elias Collins managed to reach the boar which after submerging had risen bottom side upwards. Here he clung until Mr. Dusenbury and Rainey found a small boat on Goat Island and rescued him. The bodies of Mr Oliver and his son were recovered from the dept of the river Monday afternoon by searching parties who had been dragging the river. The child's body was found about one o'clock and that of Mr Oliver two hours later. They were located near the spot of the sinking in thirty feet of water. The bodies were about eighty feet apart and about seventy five feet from the south bank of the river. The search in which a large number of citizens participated was directed by Sheriff HB Bruorton and Carl Kimberl of the United States Coast Guard Communications Service. Double funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Prince George church, Winyah. A large throng of sorrowing friends and relatives filled the ancient church and overflowed into the churchyard. The funeral cortege was escorted from the Mayer Funeral Home to the church by the American Legion ambulance and the caskets were taken into the church between ranks of American Legionnaires who served as honorary pall bearers. As the procession proceeded from the church to the graveside, the Legionnaires stood at attention. The casket of Mr. Oliver a World War Veteran was draped with an American flag. As the rites were concluded a bugler blew taps over the coffins and in the distance the mournful notes were echoed by another bugler. The flowers were many and beautiful especially those from the Legion the Legion Auxiliary, the forty and eight and the veterans administration. Active pall bearers for Mr. Oliver were George L Taylor, Wentworth Ford, Eddie Carraway, Joel King, HL Smith, all Legionnaries and BD Bourne of Charlotte a friend from boyhood. Active pall bearers for the son were LT Easley, LH Wallace, Charles Fort, Horace Byrd, Louis Overton, and DV Richardson Jr. Honorary pall bearers were members of the Legion members of the 30th division and of the Forty and Eight. Mr. Oliver was county service officer of the veterans administration. He war record began when he served on the Mexican border in 1916 at the age of 17. He served overseas during the World War with the AEF and was wounded in action. He was a member of the American Legion; helped organize Georgetown Post No 114, and was a past commander. He was born at Georgetown March 12 1899 the son of the late Colonel HL Oliver who died September 30 1938 and Mrs.Henrietta Bourke Oliver. Surviving are the widow the former Miss Martha Benn; one small daughter Ruth Benn Oliver; his mother Mrs HL Oliver and two sisters Mrs. Alfred W Ford, Hopewell Va and Mrs. L. O. Freeman Richmond Va. Also are surviving are four uncles OP Bourke, Columbia, Percy Smith, Sumter, Thad and David Oliver, both of Deland Fla; six aunts Miss EH Smith, Mrs. DT Pope, Mrs. John Pyatt, all of Georgetown; Mrs. John Douthat, Wyanoke Va; Mrs RL Knox and Miss Esther Oliver both of DeLand Fla. The son Hugh Lawson III was born at Georgetown April 14 1929. He was a member of the sixth grade of Winyah School.
