After working for some years he was united in marriage with Miss Nancy Hutchinson, the 3d day of August, 1849. She was born in 1826, and was raised in the same county as himself. Shortly after their marriage they embarked for America, and landed at New York city, after a voyage of seven weeks, soon settling at Catasauqua, Pennsylvania. Mr. Lyle worked some three years as a furnaceman, and in 1849; with his family, he emigrated to Adams County, Illinois, where he located on a farm. This he continued to cultivate until 1869, when he sold out, and with his family came to Northwest Missouri, settling in Nodaway County about five miles east of Graham, where he had purchased a tract of land two years previous. He found a wide, wild prairie, but being a man of great energy and possessed of an indomitable will, he began the improvement and cultivation of his land. In this his hopes have been realized. Here he can pass the remainder of his days in company with his wife, who has all along shared his lot. In business circles he stands prominent for his unswerving integrity and stability. He is cautious, firm in purpose, honorable and strictly methodical in all his transactions. He slelected a choice location for his home, and from the wilds of the prairie succeeded in making a fine farm of 400 acres, surrounded by Osage hedges and wire fence. Situated near the center is a large frame house. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle are both members of the Presbyterian Church. Their family consists of James, William J., Robert, Humphrey, Rankin, Sarah, Hugh H. and Alexander living, and Margaret J. and Anna M. deceased. ------------------------ LYLE FAMILY Compiled by Mary Margaret Lyle Rosenbohm, Myrtle Fuller Lyle, Robert L. Jones, and Charlene Miller Lyle Hugh Lyle, a descendent of Scottish Presbyterians that fled to Ireland during the religious wars of the 1550's, was born November 11, 1827 in Ireland. In 1852 he moved to Adams County, Illinois coming from Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. After the close of the Civil War, Mr. Lyle visited Northwest Missouri and was so well pleased with the natural facilities of Nodaway County for agriculture that he purchased a large tract of land in Hughes Township. The four hundred acres cost from $2.50 to $9.00 per acre. In 1869 he brought his family here from Illinois pitching his tent upon the prairie until a comfortable home could be erected. Lumber for the building was hauled from Savannah. There was then but one house between his home and Maryville, a distance of fourteen miles. With few neighbors, no school, no church, nothing but the best quality mother earth, covered with tall prairie grass higher than the house, he began breaking soil. His first wife, whom he married in Ireland, was Nancy Hutchison. She was well known for her qualities as a mother and wife of a pioneer. She died October 14, 1889. Four years later he married Amelia J. Rowland of Washington D.C. After spending a season abroad they settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, later moving to Washington D.C. On their annual trip to Missouri in July he died a the home of his son James, near Graham. He left seven sons and a daughter in addition to his second wife.
