He died at the patriarchal age of 90 years in Elderslie Township, on May 3, 1916. Hugh was the second son of Hugh McKay (1792-1875) and Mary Lindsay (1806-1870) of Lagg, Isle of Jura. Their home was fourteen acres of arable land near Killarrow. He had six brothers and three sisters. Two brothers went to New Zealand and Hugh came to Canada. The sisters stayed in Scotland. In 1848, when he was 22 years old, Hugh left home to make a new life for himself. He remained for some time near Toronto and then came with relations to Glenelg Township, Grey County. In the 1851 census he is recorded as living in a one story, log house with thirteen people. The oldes was his grandmother Catherine Carmichael (87) and the others were the McCannel and McCuaig family. Shortly after this Hugh went to work at Collingwood and Owen Sound and then secured a position as head teamster with an American contractor who was building docks at Southampton and Port Elgin. On July 10, 1857 Hugh married Agnes Simpson, daughter of George Simpson (1796) and Agnes Crosby of lot 4, concession 8, Arran. Agnes was born in 1828 in Legerwood Berwickshire, Scpt;amd and came to Canada with her parents when she was grown up. In 1858 Hugh and Agnes purchased lot 14, concession 12, Elderslie. They paid Duncan McGillivray $500 for his claim, although the farm was still in virgin forest. They built a log cabin and moved from Southampton in the spring of 1860 with their two small children. In the 1871 census they were reported as having one horse, one colt, four cows, four other, nine sheep, four swine, cattle killed 4, sheep killed 3. swine killed 3. pounds of butter 150, homemade cheese 50, pd of wool 35, yds of cloth 38. Hugh and Agnes regularly attended Salem Church. He served on the school board for S.S. #9 where all his children attended. In politics he was a staunch Liberal. Hugh and Agnes continued to live on their farm for 47 years. In 1907 at the age of 81, Hugh gave up farming and he and Agnes moved to Paisley. The following Spring Agnes took a stroke and died. Hugh continued to live in Paisley and his granddaughter Agnes Winch kept house for him. For the last four years of his life he lived with his son George at Salem. Hugh McKay died May 3, 1916, age 90 years. He rests peacefully in Salem Cemetery beside his wife, three daughters and a granddaughter. He had put their names on the tall, weathered grey granite tombstone but alas no one saw to having his name put on. Hugh and Agnes had eight children: 1. Mary Jane, 1857-1893, married John Winch 2.
