Setbacken, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Setbacken who had returned Monday morning from California, where they have been living for the past few years. The family were seated about the table at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Setbacken on Friday, the morning of the accident. He got up from his place opposite the table from his mother and went to a small room off the kitchen when a shot was heard and the parents rushed in and found him lying on the floor. His only words were: "O ma, can't you help me?" and it was learned he had received gun wound just below the heart. He was immediately rushed to the hospital at Madison where he died within a few minutes. Contrary to the report that a note was found on his person or anywhere about him, there was nothing left by which to indicate a suicide and the coroner who was called said he could not state whether it was or not. The gun was back behind some sacks of flour and it could not be decided whether it was accidently discharged or not. If he had done it himself it would have had to be with the left hand and this was very improbable from the position in which he was found. He has always lived a good clean life and was a kind and loving son and brother, and so far as anyone knew he had no enemies or anything that might be worrying him. He had however been quite sick just recently while in California and in his delirious condition could talk only of his friends here in Lake Preston, indicating he was lonesome and had a strong desire to come back here. His parents were unaware of this homesickness and when he recovered from his delirious condition they asked him if he was homesick and wanted to come back to Lake Preston and he said he was. Since they were somewhat of the same notion they said if he felt that way about it they would return, and Hugh seemed very anxious and asked ‘how soon,' and they got ready. His father told him they could leave in a week or so and he seemed happy to think he was going to return to his old friends and proceeded to help them get ready. Although they had work all the time they were there and the son also had work a good share of the time, they decided there was more in life than staying there where they were not contented, returned here the first of the week. It is hard enough to lose loved ones by death and when it comes in a tragic way as this it is indeed very hard and the parents and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of the whole community. Obituary Hugh Setbacken Hugh Oral Setbacken, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Setbacken, was born September 12, 1913, at Lake Preston, SD, and passed away at the hospital in Madison, SD, March 5, 1937, at the age of 23 years, 6months and 21 days. He was baptized at the Lutheran church in Lake Preston in July, 1915. he was a regular member of the Sunday school of that church until twelve years old when he became a regular attendant of the Congregational church. He was a graduate of the Lake Preston high school in the class of 1931, and after going to California he attended the University of Southern California where he took a commercial course. He leaves to mourn his untimely passing, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Setbacken, one sister, Mrs. Robert Wells of Bishop, CA., his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Setbacken, of this place and many other relatives and a host of friends. He moved with his parents to California in 1934, where he resided until this month, returning to Lake Preston on the morning of March 1st, when his parents returned here. Funeral service were conducted at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon at the home of his aunt Mr. and Mrs. Jens Sorenson, and at 2 o'clock at the Congregational church with the pastor, Rev. H. C. Juell, officiating. Burial was in the Lake Preston cemetery.
