HUGH POLLEY An old resident of Melancthon passes away": Wednesday evening of last week, shortly after the Economist had been sent to press, word was received in Shelburne to the effect that Mr. Hugh Polley had been killed at a barn raising north of Horning's Mills. Later information stated that heart failure was the cause of death, but the friends are now inclined to the opinion that death was caused by the bursting of a blood vessel in the head. A barn was being raised on the farm of Mr. Thos. Brown, just opposite Mr. Polley's place, and the deceased gentleman appeared upon the scene in time to take part in the race that usually occurs at affairs of this kind. He helped all through the contest, urging the men on his side to do their best, for it is said he dearly loved to win. He was on the ground assisting Mr. Thos. Huxtable to carry a rafter when he fell as though to faint, and in a moment expired. Dr. Gowan, of Honeywood, and Dr. Reid, of Horning's Mills, were summoned, but the man was dead before their arrival. Deceased was born in Philadelphia, Penn., on Feb. 7th, 1826, came to Canada with his parents at the age of eight years and settle in Toronto township. When a young man he came to Melancthon and settled on the west half of Lot 18, Con. 1, Old Survey, where he resided until his death. He is said to have lived in Melancthon nearly fifty years. In 1856 he married Miss Elizabeth McGhee, who survives him. They had but one child - the present wife of Mr. V. Bates, township treasurer. Mr. Polley was highly respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place on Friday last to Horning's Mills cemetery and was largely attended, there being some 150 vehicles in the procession. Services were conducted in the Methodist church by Rev. A. E. Neilly, assisted by Rev. W. Hall. We are told by a friend of the deceased that he was a firm believer in the gospel and an adherent of the Presbyterian church. *Would like to transfer this memorial to a family member
