Read More	In Memory of Hugh Pickens On last Friday at 1:45 p.m. the death angel with sickle bright, visited the bedside of Hugh T. Pickens, breaking from him the little thread which bound him to this life, and wafted his spirit on flowery beds of ease to the great home beyond. Hugh was a prosperous and well educated young man; kind hearted and honest. He was never known to take the advantage or try to beat in any way, when having a business transaction with any one. He never owned anything that was too good to lend to his neighbors; and was always ready, no matter how much his own business called him, to help or lend his aid in any way when called upon to do so. He was never known to curse or use vain words about anything. He professed religion and joined the M.E. Church sometime ago, since which time he was very faithful to his Creator. So we cannot only say “we think Hugh was a Christian” but we know he was a Christian. Among his words while sick, was this most beautiful and consoling sentence: “I am not afraid to die.” Hugh, no doubt had many dark clouds to overshadow him, but he seemed to realize that, “The inner side of every cloud is bright and shining/He therefore turned his cloud about to show the silver lining.” Most any Sunday morning, while he lived near Melrose, any one of the community could hear the silver tone of his cornet, or his own natural voice filling the cool morning breeze with melodious sounds. Melrose has never lost a member of her vast family who will be more missed, and whose life has been of more service than Hugh Pickens. He leaves a devoted wife and two loving children, a kind hearted and praying father and mother, and earnest brothers and sisters to mourn his death. But the bereaved ones have the consolation that many bereaved ones do not have, “I am not afraid to die.” The writer of this article extends his best wishes and prayers to those who mourn over his death, that they may have the spirit of God to console them in this hour of sadness.
