Berkerley SPRINGS, W.Va. — Clarissa “Clara” Isabel Moses, 91, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., formerly of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home, Frederick. Born Sept. 1, 1919, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late Hugh W. Meese and Bertha (Getson) Meese, of Lonaconing. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Footen, in 1969 and her 2nd husband, Leland Moses; two brothers, Irving Meese and Dr. Billie G. Meese; two sisters, Evelyn Kirk and Katherine “Kate” Sanders; and one daughter, Clarissa “Cribby” MacKenzie. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A long-term resident of Cumberland, Mrs. Moses was a graduate of Central High School, Lonaconing and Allegany Community College. She worked as an LPN at the Cumberland Nursing Home until her retirement. She enjoyed reading and singing and especially liked watching the cardinals at the feeders. Surviving are five sons, Joseph J. Footen and wife Avanelle, of Bay, Ore., Rev. John F. Footen and wife Diane, of Rawlings, Daniel E. Footen and wife Frances, of Hancock, James P. Footen and wife Terry, of Cumberland, and Francis X. Footen and wife Judy, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with whom she resided. She is also survived by three daughters, Mary E. Beck, of Frederick, Kathryn Ekstrom and husband Ray Likin, of Cumberland, and Patricia Chaney and husband Pete, of Hagerstown; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and 3 great-great grandchildren. Footen) ---------------------------------------- Maryland Bureau of Mines, Inspector’s Annual Report On February 22, 1938, about 12:45 P.M., Mr. Hugh Meese, a miner, employed by the Koontz Coal Company, in Swanton-Bakerstown Mine, was fatally injured by a fall of bone, and died from such injuries on February 25, 1938. Coal had been removed from beneath about four (4) square feet of bone, a safety prop was set just about the center: this bone was cut off by a water stained break on the left and a slip on the right. The bone broke directly over the safety prop, one piece falling in each side, the piece on the left falling on victim. The place was well timbered. The miners made an error in judgment as the bone coal should have been taken down. The bone still standing is too loose to try to hold by timbering. This place is being driven towards the outcrop. Mr. Meese was listed as age 52, an American, married, living in Barton, and leaving a widow and one child under 16 years of age. The Mine Foreman was Notley Cook. The Mine Inspector’s recommendation was “All the bone coal must be taken down in this place at once.” Compensation awarded was $5,000 direct payment, and $125 for funeral costs.
