Humphrey Burdett, born in Beckenridge Co., Ky., June 6, 1809. His youth and early manhood was spent upon a farm and as a flat boatman upon the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. In the year of 1837 he came west to the territory of Iowa, locating upon the banks of the Mississippi, one and one half miles above the present city of Muscatine, where he lived for 35 years. His youth and early manhood was spent upon a farm and as a flat boatman upon the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. In the year of 1837 he came west to the territory of Iowa, locating upon the banks of the Mississippi, one and one half miles above the present city of Muscatine, where he lived for 35 years. In 1841 he was united in marriage with Miss Esther Bennefiel. In the Spring of 1872, accompanied by his wife, he removed to Nebraska, locating at Palmyra, Otoe Co., where on April 15, 1874, his faithful wife and companion departed this life at the age of fifty years. After the death of his wife he continued to reside in Palmyra until the Spring of 1885 when he broke up his home, spending his remaining days in the homes of his children residing in Nebraska..... Owing to his advanced age and physical weakness, he mingled but little with his acquaintances during the latter years of his life, the two of which he spent in the home of his youngest daughter Hellen, Mrs. H. P. Farnsworth of Unadilla, Otoe Co., Neb., where at the advanced age of 87 years and 23 days he departed this life on June 29, 1896 at 10 o'clock p.m. and was buried in Rosewood Cemetery on Tuesday noon.
